Watercolours by James C Howard

In his later years he undertook some teaching, and after moving to Ditchling he was a neighbour to the celebrated artist Charles Knight RA.

His work has been purchased by a number of galleries, both in the UK and abroad, and formed part of a British Council touring exhibition.

He had shows at the Ditchling Gallery and at the Ralph Lewis gallery in Brighton. Ralph was a talented author and racontuer and I remember him with affection.

My Father was a watercolourist of some talent. He was self taught and his style was based on the Norwich school, with artists such as John Sell Cotman. He was hung in London's Royal Academy in 1932, at that time he was one of the youngest artists to be accepted, and again in 1949.

He was proud to be a be accepted as a member of the prestigious Artists' Society, later the Langham Sketch Club in London, which met on Wednesday evenings to paint a small picture, or drawing, which was then criticised by the group, and a good dinner followed.
The Sketch Books
Especially in his early years he was a prodigious sketcher, and his sketch books are numerous. Recently, when looking at them again, I realised what an accomplished draughtsman he was. Examples of these works are here.

My Father had the most wonderful handwriting, a skill which, sadly, has not been passed on to me.
